System Executive for Rehabilitation Services
Memorial Hermann Health System

This July we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which is built on the principles of equal opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency. The law was created to remove barriers that isolate people with disabilities, with specific requirements in the areas of building access, transportation and telecommunications. It also requires reasonable accommodation in employment settings to help ensure that everyone can contribute in the workplace.

In the past two and a half decades we’ve seen sweeping change in all of these areas except employment. Many Americans with disabilities remain outside the economic and social mainstream of American life.

Through the Independent Living Research Utilization program and other initiatives, TIRR Memorial Hermann works to break down barriers to all things that give life meaning, including work – the new frontier for change. You may remember seeing the lapel button, “Attitudes are the real disability.” That’s why we share stories of former patients like Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and pro football player Amobi Okoye in each issue of the TIRR Memorial Hermann Journal. Until everyone is free to return to productivity, there’s still work to be done.
