Accolades

David B. Arciniegas, MD, was named recipient of the 2015 Mitchell Rosenthal Award for scientific and clinical achievement in the field of brain injury rehabilitation. The award will be presented at the 39th Annual Williamsburg Brain Injury Rehabilitation Conference to be held in April 2015. The Rosenthal Award was established in 2008 by the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems project directors in memory of Dr. Rosenthal as an inspiration to new generations of investigators.

The TIRR Memorial Hermann Pharmacy department is one of nine hospital pharmacies in the United States – and the only one in a rehabilitation hospital – chosen by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists to participate in an Antimicrobial Stewardship Mentored Impact Program. The selection process was competitive, with 110 proposals submitted. Carolyn Alessi, Pharm.D., and Susan Loughlin, Pharm.D., BCPS, submitted the proposal with the goal of expanding the hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship program to improve patient care, reduce rates of resistance, prevent antimicrobial-related toxicity, reduce the rate of readmissions to acute care hospitals and reduce the costs of inappropriate antimicrobial use and health care-associated infections.

On the Move

David B. Arciniegas, MD, served as president of the International Brain Injury Association’s Tenth World Congress on Brain Injury held in San Francisco, March 19-23, 2014. During that meeting he was elected to a four-year term as chair of the International Brain Injury Association and began serving in that role at the conclusion of the conference.

Victor Chang, M.D., Allison Clark, PhD, Cindy Ivanhoe, M.D., Kacey Maestas, PhD, Angelle Sander, PhD, and Mark Sherer, PhD, APBB, FACRM, attended the 14th Annual Galveston Brain Injury Conference (GBIC), an invited forum that provides the opportunity for experts in the field of brain injury to come together for two days to discuss topics of importance to the care of individuals living with the effects of brain injury. A “think tank” that has convened annually since 2000, the GBIC is coordinated and sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Health Professions and the Transitional Learning Center of Galveston. The conference was held May 7-9, 2014.

Cindy B. Ivanhoe, MD, was invited to serve on the Clinical Education Committee for the upcoming International Toxin Association Meeting, to be held in January 2015 in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Ivanhoe is on the board of directors of the association.
