TIRR Memorial Hermann recently achieved the "Pathway to Excellence" designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Currently, just 103 hospitals and long-term care facilities in the United States have the Pathway to Excellence designation. Of these designated hospitals, only five are rehab or post-acute. The "Pathway" designation validates the professional satisfaction of nurses at TIRR Memorial Hermann, and identifies the hospital as one of the best places to work.

"We are proud and honored to earn this designation," says Memorial Hermann Chief Nursing Officer/Chief Operations Officer Mary Ann Euliarte. "It illustrates the fact that TIRR Memorial Hermann is committed to our nursing staff and to what they deem important to their practice."

TIRR Memorial Hermann earned the Pathway to Excellence distinction by successfully completing a thorough review process that documents quality initiatives in creating a positive work environment as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives were met by the hospital's practices, policies and culture. TIRR Memorial Hermann nurses then confirmed the hospital's commitment by participating in a confidential online survey.

To apply for the Pathway designation, the hospital submitted a written description of how the facility meets the 12 ANCC Practice Standards required of all "Pathway" facilities. These standards include nurses controlling nursing practices, professional development opportunities for nurses, and the involvement of the CNO in hospital decisions and activities.

A three-nurse review panel then evaluated the application for compliance with the standards. The entire process can take years to complete.

"Appreciation goes to our nursing staff, who worked so hard to make this achievement possible," says Euliarte. "We value their contributions to our patients, families, physicians, and the Memorial Hermann Health System."
