Project positions hospital to meet growing health needs in Fort Bend County
Memorial Hermann, the state’s most recognized system for patient safety and quality awards, broke ground on a $93 million expansion of its Sugar Land campus on May 14.
The project will upgrade the hospital’s Emergency Center, expand surgical capabilities, and build both a second medical professional building and a new six-story, 155,000-square-foot patient tower. “As the population in Sugar Land and Fort Bend County continue to grow, it is our responsibility to respond with additional infrastructure, new technology and a higher level of service,” said Greg Haralson, CEO of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital.
The first phase of construction will add eight beds to the hospital’s Emergency Center, increasing the total to 26 beds, and will include a new surgical suite with full digital integration. A new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine and an Advanced Computed Tomography (CT) scanner will also be installed in the first phase, which is expected to be complete by the fall of 2014.
Phase two involves the construction of a second professional office building and patient tower. The new professional office building will provide 100,000 square feet of combined physician offices, expanded sports medicine and rehabilitation services, and outpatient imaging.
Construction of the new tower is expected to begin in early 2015. Highlights of this significant addition include an expanded nursery and neonatal intensive-care unit, additional medical surgical beds and four shelled operating rooms to accommodate future growth.
Mayor of Sugar Land, James A. Thompson, explained that Memorial Hermann has a strong partnership with the city of Sugar Land and looks forward to working together to advance the health of its residents.

As a member of the hospital’s advisory council, I have eagerly anticipated the campus expansion and what it will bring to our community,” said Mayor Thompson. “The City Council and I are focused on making the city a quality place to live and work and committed community partners like Memorial Hermann are key to our success.”
Several Sugar Land City Council members, including the Mayor, and other city, state and county officials attended the groundbreaking event.
“Memorial Hermann has a long history of serving the residents of Sugar Land and Fort Bend County. We are excited to see the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land campus expand and continue to meet the needs and advance the health of our rapidly growing community,” said State Representative Phil Stephenson.
“The groundbreaking ceremony represents the continuation of a great relationship between the residents of Sugar Land and Memorial Hermann,” added Haralson. “We want to continue to be the healthcare provider of choice, and earn trust by providing safe, high quality and comprehensive care to the families in Sugar Land and the surrounding community.”
This is the first major development project undertaken at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land since opening in 2006. In addition to facility expansion projects, Memorial Hermann continues to expand its services and medical specialties on the campus and all throughout the Greater Houston area.
