HUMBLE, TEXAS (June 18, 2015)

Four recent high school graduates from the Lake Houston area received scholarships from the Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital Volunteers and the Northeast Hospital Foundation for their volunteer work at Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital.

Emily Ford and Jaycie Troung of Atascocita High School (AHS); Slavena (Ci Ci) Dontcheva Dontcheva of Carl Wunsche Senior High School(CWHS); and Valbona Rashiti of Kingwood High School (KHS) received scholarships for their combined 1,276 hours of service during their years volunteering at Memorial Hermann Northeast.

Ford, who totaled 572 hours of service in her four years volunteering at the hospital, will major in biology/pre-medicine at Nicholls State University and has a career goal of working with Doctors Without Borders. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Health Science Program, which allowed her to participate in clinical rotations at Memorial Hermann Northeast and other area clinics. Ford participated in advanced placement (AP) and dual-credit classes, and was a member of the Varsity A Cappella Mixed Choir and Forte Show Choice at AHS.

Troung, who accumulated 185 volunteer hours during her two years of service, will attend the University of Houston, where she will major in biology with the goal of becoming a pharmacist. Troung was a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Student Council, Key Club, Math and Science League and HOSA-Future Health Professionals at AHS.

Dontcheva Dontcheva, of Spring, totaled 257 hours during the two years she volunteered at Memorial Hermann Northeast. She has narrowed her college choices to University of Texas-Austin and Columbia University, and plans to major in mathematics with a focus on actuarial science and finance. Dontcheva Dontcheva’s long-term goal is to become an actuarial fellow. She was a member of the varsity debate team, varsity choir, math club, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society and Lion Players Musical Theatre at CWHS.

Rashiti, of Atascocita, accumulated 262 hours during her four years of volunteer service. She will attend the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston where she will major in bio-medical engineering before going on to medical school. Rashiti was a member of the National Honor Society, played basketball, threw shot put and discus in field and track competition, and played the clarinet at KHS.

Last summer, 55 students contributed more than 3,800 combined volunteer hours at Memorial Hermann Northeast. This summer, 75 students from the Lake Houston area will volunteer at Memorial Hermann Northeast and will be eligible for future Volunteer and Foundation scholarships. In addition, 15 students from Quest High School and one student from YES Preparatory School will be volunteering at Memorial Hermann Northeast during the 2015-16 school year.
