The 2008 Global Breastfeeding Challenge will commence with breastfeeding mothers at registered sites in over 13 countries having their breastfeeding little ones "latch on" to promote the importance of breastfeeding and to be counted as participants. Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital is a registered site in south Montgomery County. Breastfeeding moms, and their breastfeeding little ones, are invited for this special global challenge.

The Global Breastfeeding Challenge is for the most babies breastfeeding at one site at one time, as well as for the most children breastfeeding on one day at the same local time. The current record for the largest number of children at one site is 3,738, children achieved in Manila in 2006 and the current record for multiple sites was set in 2007 by the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge with 5,374 children at 225 sites. In North America on October 11, the Quintessence Foundation will also recognize the region (province, territory or state) with the most children participating as a percentage of the birth rate.
Why this challenge? Breastfeeding has many well-documented benefits including better health for both mothers and children. However , many women fail to meet their own breastfeeding goals and wean their children prematurely, well before meeting recommended guidelines. Globally, the aggressive marketing of breast milk substitutes is a major barrier to breastfeeding success. Breastfeeding is health promotion in action.
