Pre-Driving Assessment Program
TIRR Memorial Hermann Outpatient Rehabilitation centers offer pre-driving assessments for people experiencing functional changes due to a neurologic incident, trauma, surgery or the aging process. It is an essential part of the driving assessment to address any deficits that may influence safety and independence as a licensed driver.
Medical conditions that may affect driving skills include:
- Acquired or traumatic brain injury
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Macular degeneration
- Cardiac disease
These conditions may affect vision, memory, attention, and the ability to problem solve and react quickly.
Licensed occupational therapists will formally assess the following:
- Spatial awareness
- Problem solving
- Cognitive processing skills
- Reaction time
- Ability to read traffic signs
- Physical performance skills
Appropriate recommendations will be made and tailored to individual patient needs. The patient and referring physician will be informed of the recommendations, which may include:
- Return to or continue with independent driving
- Referral to a behind-the-wheel driving assessment
