SLP Student Educator Workshop

Overview

Description: There is a gap in supervisory knowledge and skills that has been identified across the system through topics brought up a Speech Therapy Council.  This course is designed for speech-language pathology educators within MHHS.  It will cover interviewing students, required forms, additional forms/resources, assessing student mastery of medical speech-language pathology, student requirements and expectations for students, learning contracts, expectations for those supervising, and ASHA resources.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the required documentation for students completing externships
  2. Explain the goal of the student interviewing process
  3. Review current resources available and generate ways in which each site may be able to incorporate them into practice
  4. Construct a process for your site similar to other sites to improve consistency and expectations

Speaker Information

Michelle Weber Dehgan is the Research/Education Coordinator at TIRR Memorial Hermann, as well as, a practicing clinician with 20 years of experience. She graduated with Communication Sciences & Disorders degrees from The University of Texas @ Austin (BS) and The University of Houston (MA). She has completed additional education and training in research & epidemiology. She has special interests in dysphagia, brain injury, ethics, and spinal cord injury. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders. She presents locally and nationally on a variety of topics related to these areas of interest.

Any relevant financial and non-financial relationships will be disclosed via speaker agreement, written notification after agreement, and prior to presentation.

Education

Continuing Education Credits: SLP: Memorial Hermann Healthcare System is an ASHA Approved Provider of continuing education- provider ID ABAF. This course is offered for 0.3 ASHA CEU’s. The assignment of ASHA CEU’s does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures from ASHA.

Participants must attend the entire course in order to receive CEU’s and course certificate. No partial credits will be given.

Cost/Registration: Required reservation fee turned into Education Academy with registration information open only to MHHS employees. Should you cancel within 14 days of the course you will forfeit your deposit.

Cancellations:

Refunds will be granted if cancellation notice is received in writing at least 14 calendar days prior to the course start date to continuingeducationregistration@memorialhermann.org. If you register and do not attend, or do not fulfill the requirements of the class, your reservations fee will not be refunded. Cancellation of the event by Memorial Hermann will result in a full refund of monies received. Memorial Hermann is not responsible for the refund of travel or hotel expenses under any circumstances. Memorial Hermann reserves the right to cancel or change any programs for due cause. In the event of a cancelation, participants will be notified via contact email and contact phone number submitted in the registration.

Directions / Parking:

  • Kirby Glenn has free surface lot parking. It is a very busy parking lot, please leave closer parking for patients and families. TIRR Memorial Hermann Outpatient Rehabilitation at Kirby Glen is located at the corner of Kirby Drive and S. Braeswood Blvd.
  • Greater Heights garage 2 is recommended for parking.
