Class size: Class Size: Day One limited to 40 participants; Day 2 limited to 10 participants

Description

A training and education course for Speech-Language Pathologists without prior knowledge in Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) administration to learn historical use of the procedure, as well as, provide basic training in interpretation and documentation using this assessment method.

Day One Learning Objectives:

  • The attendee will define and describe the anatomy of the nasal cavity and pharynx as it relates to the FEES procedure.
  • The attendee will analyze normal and abnormal swallow function and determine the etiology of the deficits.
  • The attendee will document following a case study to demonstrate the ability to determine deficits and create an appropriate treatment plan with recommendations.

Day One Assessment of Learning Objectives:

  • Ability to document following a case study with video clip.

Day Two Learning Objective:

  • The attendee will demonstrate understand of and ability to pass a FEES scope with physical manipulation of the instrumentation on "normals".

Michelle Dehgan 2017Michelle Dehgan

Michelle Dehgan is the Research/Education Coordinator for the Speech-Language Pathology Department at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX. She completed her undergraduate degree at The University of Texas at Austin and her master’s degree at The University of Houston. She has completed additional education and training in research and epidemiology. She has been practicing clinically for 20 years and has special interests in dysphagia, brain injury, and spinal cord injury. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing & Swallowing Disorders. She presents locally and nationally on a variety of topics related to these areas of interest.

Emily Ferguson 2017Emily Ferguson

Emily Ferguson is a Level III medical Speech-Language Pathologist who has been practicing in acute and inpatient rehab settings for 8 years. She is currently practicing at Memorial Hermann-TMC. She is a graduate of both Baylor and the University of Texas at Dallas. Her areas of specialty are dysphagia, FEES mentoring, and managing the medically the complex patient.

Kerri Higgins 2017Kerri Higgins

Kerri Higgins is a Level III Speech-Language Pathologist at Memorial Hermann-TMC. She practiced 5+ years in inpatient rehabilitation at TIRR and has practiced 1+ years in acute care at TMC. She completed her undergraduate degree at Texas Christian University and her master’s degree at The University of Texas at Dallas. She has special interests in dysphagia, brain injury, SCI, tracheostomy/ventilator dependent patients, patient s/p lung transplant and AAC. She participates in multi-discipline collaborative education programs throughout the cardiac, neurology, general medicine, and trauma services.

Day one of this course is offered for 0.8 ASHA CEU’s and Day two is offered for 0.45 CEU’s. The assignment of ASHA CEU’s does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures from ASHA.

In the event of a course cancellation, participants will be notified via email & contact phone number on the registration form below. Please fill out all information below.

Cancellations: Refunds will be granted if cancellation notice is received in writing no later than 14 calendar days prior to the course start date to ContinuingEducationRegistration@memorialhermann.org.If you register and do not attend, or do not fulfill the requirements of the class, your course fee will not be refunded. Cancellation of the event by TIRR Memorial Hermann will result in a full refund of monies received. TIRR Memorial Hermann is not responsible for the refund of travel or hotel expenses under any circumstances. TIRR Memorial Hermann reserves the right to cancel or change any programs for due cause.
