Cindy B. Ivanhoe, MD, received the Distinguished Clinical Award last October at the meeting of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation held in New Orleans. She was named Alumnus of the Year at the Baylor/UTHealth Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Alliance in June 2016.

Carl Josehart graduated from the American Leadership Forum’s (ALF) Class XXXVI at a commencement ceremony held in May 2016. The ALF is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to join and strengthen diverse leaders to serve the common good. Each year, established leaders from various sectors in the community participate in a yearlong national leadership development program in which they engage in dialogue, explore differences and build relationships. After graduation, senior fellows serve as catalysts in Houston, bringing stakeholders from all walks of life together to create opportunities to work together and address urgent public concerns.

Dharmendra Kumar, MD, Manuel Mas, MD, and Fabiolla Kopp, MD, have received board certification in Brain Injury Medicine through the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Sheng Li, MD, PhD, will receive the prestigious Early Career Academician Award from the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP). Of the last 20 recipients of this honor, at least 10 have become department chairs and most have received multiple federal research grants. The award will be presented at the AAP's 50th anniversary meeting in Las Vegas on February 10, 2017.

Mark Sherer, PhD, ABPP, FACRM, has been awarded the Harold Yuker Award for Research Excellence by the journal Rehabilitation Psychology. The award is given for the most highly rated paper published in the previous year. Dr. Yuker was a psychologist who was born with cerebral palsy and is best known for his work on attitudes about disability. The award was presented at the meeting of the American Psychological Association held last August in Denver.

Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, MD, was admitted to the incoming class of the highly competitive Program for Academic Leadership (PAL) of the Association of Academic Physiatrists. PAL is a three-year program aimed at developing the academic leadership skills of early career faculty. She also was recently voted by the faculty senators as chair-elect of UTHealth’s McGovern Medical School Faculty Senate. Following a one-year term, she will ascend to the position of chair of the senate, the first PM&R faculty member to hold the prestigious position. In addition, she received certification by the American Board of Medical Quality and is vice-chair for quality and patient safety.

Ping Zhou, PhD, director of the NeuroRecovery Research Center Myo-Neuro Engineering for Rehabilitation Laboratory, will be promoted to the rank of professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at McGovern Medical School at the beginning of the new academic year in September. Dr. Zhou has received multiple federal grants; his laboratory is supported by the Memorial Hermann Foundation Neuroscience Campaign.
